Our Story
The origins of SOMA MATER can be traced back to 2019, when Greg and Sheikh Majid began to discuss food security data as a whole. It was in the midst of the sharing and discourse on food that the idea of SOMA MATER came to life. The two realized that they shared a common belief — that data was the key challenge to the Middle East food system; and on a big paper roll, they mapped out various data points, drawing out their connections in colored pens. With just the name of the company in mind, they began the journey.
The name SOMA MATER stems from the founders’ years engulfed in the world of biology. The word SOMA is the Latin word for the body of an organism or cell and its working parts, what makes a cell work. The collaborative work of the parts allow for a cell to do what it needs to do. The word MATER is a reference to the Earth, the Latin word for “mother.” Sheikh Majid began with the reference of Dura Mater, the hard mother casing around the spine and the brain. In that sense, SOMA MATER speaks to the mother Earth or mother system. The mother embraces and sees all the parts, just like we strive to see all the Middle East countries and how they can offer a sustainable region. As the mother mediates between the members of the family, SOMA MATER strives to bridge the gap between private and public sectors.
